George Will and Healthcare

George Will does a great job explaining healthcare and liberals in this video. It is tough when those pesky facts get in the way of liberal ideology.

Will: You say they have huge profits. As you know, confiscate all the profits of all the health insurance companies, with those profits you could finance our healthcare for 48 hours. What you do for the next 363 days I don’t know. Second, you say there’s not enough competition? Fine, let them compete in a national market across state lines.

Reich: Yes, let them compete across state lines, fine. But not a race to the bottom. Set minimum federal standards because we’ve seen over and over again that the recipients of health insurance don’t know what they are buying very often. Until there are common standards, minimal standards, then people are going to be taken. And that is what’s happened over and over again.

Will: There you have the premise of this legislation and the core of today’s liberalism: the American people are such dopes they can’t be counted upon to buy their own insurance.

State of the Union

I like this analysis of the State of the Union address. It is more of the same.





Government is not the solution, it is the problem. I would love to see healthcare reformed, but having the government take over is not what is needed to reform it. I can give him some ideas on reforming healthcare and I would start by reforming the lawyers. Frivolous lawsuits drive-up the costs of healthcare. I also like the ideas in the video. The problem is not a deficit of ideas and real reforms, the problem is Obama and the politicians (Democrats and Republicans) are beholden to special interest groups and lobbyist and are more interested in making themselves wealthy off from the taxpayers than they are in really addressing the problems.

Hayek vs. Keynes

While I do not like rap I thought this video comparing the thoughts of Hayek and Keynes is really good.




The visual metaphor of Keynes getting drunk and then having a hangover is really good. You can only live so long on borrowed money and then it comes time to pay the piper. I like Hayek. He adheres to principles rather than hype. We are living this comparison now as the "stimulus" has not done any good and it will actually make things worse in the long run. You cannot break natural laws; you can only break yourself against them. The Law of the Harvest (Hayek) will eventually win and you will reap what you have sown.

Happy Cost of Government Day!

Happy Cost of Government Day! Today, August 12, is Cost of Government Day (COGD), the day of the calendar year when the average American worker has earned enough gross income to pay off his or her share of the spending and regulatory burdens imposed by government on the federal, state, and local levels.

COGD falls 26 days later than last year's date, and it's 23 days later than the previous all-time high of July 20, in 1982. There are numerous reasons for this explosive growth in government spending including TARP, the so-called Stimulus, and the big three auto "bailouts." If Congress and the President had not pushed for TARP, Americans would have celebrated COGD on July 25 rather than on August 12.

How does that make you feel? Just imagine what will happen if the government takes over healthcare!

Oakland Temple

I needed to come to California for work and due to the schedule I had to stay over the weekend. Since I had a Saturday available and I was only about 30 minutes away from the Oakland Temple, I took advantage of the opportunity and went to the temple. It was a great experience and a lovely temple. It is one of the larger temples and one of the few that does not have Angel Moroni on the top of it. It was dedicated in 1964 so it is older than I am. It is interesting because it has a 1960's feel to the design, including the Celestial Room.

This is the front of the temple. The sun was bright and with the little digital camera I have with me it was hard to see the screen so I was hoping the pictures would turn out. One of the advantages of the SLR camera is even in bright sunlight just by looking in the viewfinder it is possible to see what you are taking a picture of.

The Oakland Temple has a terrace and the public has access to it. This is a picture taken from the terrace. The parking lot was full and it was really crowded with all the wedding parties there. June is the time for weddings.

Mothers Day Picnic

Lori had the chance to go to Ryan's Mother's Day Picnic with his preschool. This is a picture of them at the picnic and Ryan looks to be as full of trouble as he generally is. They look great together. I am glad Lori had the chance to attend with him.
