Award Day at School

Brett and Jared finished the school year here in Texas and as part of that they had an awards ceremony. I do not want to make too much light of it, but they found a way to give every one of the kids an award. The good news is they did not have to think very hard on what to give Brett and Jared because they were both on the honor roll.

This is Jared with his class. Jared was on the honor roll and he received an award for the most improved reader. While he has study hard and made great progress this year, the reality is that they did not have any records from his Kindergarten performance since me moved from Illinois and they screwed-up on testing him when they got here. He could read just fine before we moved to Texas and he finished the year well above grade level, which was where he needs to be. He was above grade level in his reading in Illinois as well but the Texas schools can pat themselves on the back for his great improvement. He was reading above grade level after Kindergarten in Illinois so if you detect some cynicism with regard to the most improved reader award, you are right.


This is Brett with his class. Brett was also on the honor roll and got some other awards as well. He finished the year well above grade level and passed the dreaded TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) Tests without any problems. He took the reading test with a fever and only missed one question and did not miss anything on the math test. We are proud of both Brett and Jared for their academic achievements even though this was their first year in a new school in a different state.
